Just back from a full ( and expensive ) service from Breitling on Regents St a Breitling Emergency Superquartz Titatnium in Mint Condition and supplied with the Service receipt  , the Breitling travel inner and outer box and our own 12 month warranty and certificate of authenticity.

The Breitling Emergency is a unique watch and as the case is of titanium it feels light on the wrist. This watch will fit up to a 7.5 inch wrist but if you like your watches “loose” you may want to buy another link which are available.

The Breitling Emergency is a must have piece of kit for anyone who travels a lot especially off the beaten track. This is the twin antenna model which gives the emergency beacon a much greater range and is a must have watch for most pilots.

It is a little known fact Ernest Schneider,  took the reins at  Breitling in 1979 at a time when it was in extreme financial difficulty ( along with many other watch brands ) but buy introducing a new range of fantastic models he helped to manage the firm into profitability.

As it happens Ernest had been a officer in Swiss Army signal corps during World War II . He was also a keen engineer and pilot with a interest in electronics. Coincidently during his army period he became involved with N.A.T.O. and it was at one conference ( discussing the high cost of emergency beacons being triggered setting of emergency searches  )  .

These false alarms were costing a lot of money ( Imagine a emergency search and rescue operation being triggered by a pilot  ) . This planted the idea in his mind to try and design a personal transmitter which had the added advantage of being portable and therefore available at all times the watch was being worn or just being to hand.

The development took a decade of work with Dassault Electronique of France ( where the transmitter is still made ) . The most difficult part being not how the transmitter would work ( it actually transmits to a satellite system ) but how it could be miniaturised , made reliable and draw minimal power to allow it to transmit for extended periods of time. According to the Breitling Emergency manual the watch transmits at a AM frequency of 121.5MHz for 0.75 seconds every 2.25 seconds , it then transmits the morse letter B ( dash dot dot dot ) every 60 seconds.

Whilst having numerous functions the watch is simple to use and manuals are available online at Breitling Source.
