There are many makers of military watches and we buy all military watches . The best known brands are Omega , Longines , Jaeger LeCoultre , International Watch Company and Panerai.
Rolex made many models for various military services but are are not famed for their WW2 models in terms of the official army broad arrow used on all watches issued by the British Military.
Hans Wilsdorf however was a full supporter of the Allies during WW2 and often sent watches to POW’s with clear instructions for them not to pay until their eventual return to freedom. Rolex did however make watches for the special services and here is a link to a very interesting article on the subject.
My main interest is however the watches worn by the general military and most of us have heard of what is now known as the “Dirty Dozen “
The watches ( Buren , Cyma , Eterna , Grana , IWC , JLC ,Lemania , Longines , Omega , Record , Timor and Vertex ) were designed and delivered in 1944 and 1945. The Dirty Dozen watches were created in extremely limited supply to a specific design requirement of the MoD . It is also alleged that there are only around 20 full sets of the Dirty Dozen watches in existence however I suspect there are many more hidden away.
Somewhat less well known but equally important are the ATP issue watches . ATP simply stands for Army Trade Pattern which again was a specification issued by the British army for a standard watch to be issued to all soldiers.
The case sizes were between 30 and 34 mm with a white or silver dial with black numbers as a clear contrast especially in low light conditions. The dial also featured a sub seconds dial reminiscent of early wrist watch design and a hangover from pocket watches.
A feature of all of these watches is the fixed lug or bars holding the straps. Military watches need to stay on the wrist in severe conditions and the spring bars on any watch are often the weakest point.
